Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, as I knew it as a child, was the epitome of "down-home, southern-born, best-of-the-best church service." Oh, my mercy! Such precious memories! Yes, there was the "Do you know him?" shouting, stomping, in-your-face, exciting minister! During this time, Rev. Amos Eugene Hagins was pastor, one who got out among his flock, sat down to Sunday dinner with them - his family and theirs - enjoying food that we no longer find today, at least as organic or sumptuous as that. And the voices! We had the sounds of Sam Cooke, Luther Van Dross, Teddy Pendergrass, Oleta Adams, Della Reese, Thelma Houston, Denice Williams, The Temptations. You name it, we heard it, in the Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Choir. Singing gospel, mind you. Those voices were every bit as beautiful although attached to other names. Such sweet harmony, such singular gifts, we would hear. So much pure talent passed over the threshholds of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Beyond the talented vocalists, there were those who spoke poetry, some who wrote it; some who acted in plays, some who wrote plays; some who were faithful, some who heartily led the faithful. During my developing years, Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was the place to be on Sunday when its doors were open. There was Sunday School on Sunday mornings. There was a strong youth program. And, there was that mighty fine "sold out" service on second Sundays! I think love resided there with deep feelings of comfort and family. For this, the name, Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, stays special. Sadly, much has been lost in today's world. Many of us must carry church, along with memories, in our hearts and minds.
